As we continue the Easter Season, our Gospel today presents Luke’s account of the resurrection day. Our Gospel picks up, when the two who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus return to Jerusalem and tell the disciples all about how Jesus had walked with them and explained the scriptures to them “and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.” The Jesus stood in their midst and said: “Peace be with you.” Jesus then proves to them that he is not a ghost or a vision by having them touch him to see he was flesh and bone and he even eats baked fish as a further proof. When they finally believed he opened their minds. He then gave them and us our commission: “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”
In our first reading from Acts, Peter continues this theme: Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away. And he preaches this to the very people who turned Jesus over to the Romans to be killed.
In our second reading, St. John tells us that we have to keep his commandments: But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him.
We break bread at every Mass and so we are witnesses to Christ. Jesus is present in the bread and wine and he is also present in us, his church and his people. We must see Jesus in each other to be true witnesses of his love.
We had all the carpet in the hall and church cleaned last week for $973.00. I hope you can see the difference. Please be careful with spills both in the church and the hall. If a stain is cleaned up right away it doesn’t leave as many marks on the floor. There are still a few Play Dough stains that just won’t come up. Please keep Play Dough off the carpet.
Let us continue to pray for peace in the world. Let us also pray for vocations to the church. Let us pray for the sick of the parish. Let us pray that all will come to respect life. Let us pray for one another and for the canonization of Father Tolton. In a special way, let us pray for the success of the Families-First Convention in Indy this week.
